Lost Hiatus Fantasy League: Week 2

Introduction
Here we are once again, taking a look at an episode of Lost, scoring it, and marveling at my video production mediocrity :-P

After the success of last week's post, DarkUFO and I hope to continue to improve and refine our scoring system, as well as shorten the video updates to a concise and friendly run-time.

This week we watched episode 2x07, "The Other 48 Days." Featuring only 7 of our League characters, this episode presented us with a plethora of scoring questions to resolve before bringing you this update. Below is a special section that we hope will answer most of the scoring questions you might have had while watching. The Other 48 Days (In 500 words or less)

Remember how Oceanic Flight 815 was torn apart as it crashed? Well, boy howdy! Some of those tail section folk done survived that there crash! Whodathunkit?

This episode focuses on the trials and tribulations of these Tailies, as they came to be called. Their exploits, while harrowing and freaky for sure, certainly would not have made for good television. Thusly, we say "good call" to the producers for making Season 1 all about the more "civilized" camp of Lostaways.

Murder, mishaps and mayhem come standard in "The Other 48 Days." Ana-Lucia comes to underwater and swims ashore amidst a swarm of screaming, injured folk- it's a bloody screaming mess. Literally.

The first night, a few of the natives decide to kidnap a few of the survivors. Creepy in and of itself, but we already knew there were 'Others' on this Island, so it wasn't quite as creeptastic as it could have been. These Others are thwarted, however, when Mr. Eko introduces two of them to the finer points of Mr. Rock. As if the bloody bodies of crash victims wasn't enough, the Tailies now have the bloody bodies of some freakish hobos on their hands.

Ana-Lucia, being the smart cookie that she is figures out that these people were here before them and that the beach might not be safe. This sets off some tension between Ana and a guy named Nathan, who, in a clever feat of misdirection, is made out to make us think that he is one of these Others.

Turns out Nathan is just a crabby Canadian guy who lacks quality conflict resolution skills. After getting attacked again and moving camp, Ana-Lucia does her best Charles Bronson impersonation and digs and digs and digs until she is satisfied with her new found playpen (read: tiger pit). Ana chucks Nathan inside and grills him about the people who were taken. Goodwin, who's really the Other, kills Nathan before Ana can realize she has the wrong guy, but it turns out to be too little too late.

After discovering a new DHARMA station, The Arrow (a decidedly dumpy little place that even Locke would struggle to call home), Ana and Goodwin climb up the mountain to test the radio. The hills aren't exactly alive with the sound of music though, as Ana is one smart cookie and makes Goodwin come clean about being an Other. She then skewers him with her walking stick and heads back to the Arrow.

Later on, we find out that Bernard was talking to Boone, Jin floated ashore, and Eko is one bad mother- shut your mouth! He lays some hurt on our Lostaways with his Jesus stick, but they all make nice and head over to the Lostie camp for some s'mores. That and Sawyer is dying from an infected wound. Ick.

The episode ends where we left off the episode before- Ana killing Shannon by accident and Sayid looking like he's about to go medieval on her butt.

A majority of the action in this episode involved Ana-Lucia and Mr. Eko, but they are not in our League. This left some of the scoring a bit sparse for our League folk, but there was no dearth of questions as to how we were to score the episode. Here several important rulings we made that led us to the scores as they currently stand:

1. Nobody gets points for 'discovering' Goodwin. Technically Goodwin discovered the Tailies. He was on the Island first and went to see if there were survivors. He willingly made himself known to the group (even though he hid the fact that he was an Other). It will be hard to tell in Season 4 whether a person intends to be discovered or not, but in this case, Goodwin went looking for the Tailies.

2. Points will not be taken away for hurting or killing animals. Goodwin killed a chicken for food, but this doesn't incur a points deduction. Points are only taken away for injuring or hurting "someone," as our points system says. In the Fantasy League, animals are not people too. Sorry PETA.

3. Getting knocked unconscious counts as an injury. Points will be taken away from those who get knocked out, and from those who knock others out.

4. The Tailies are given credit for discovering The Arrow station. True, we first saw the Arrow station in 2x04 when Michael, Sawyer and Jin were taken there by the Tailies, but the Tailies get those points because "The Other 48 Days" actually shows the moment of true discovery.

5. Goodwin does not get credit for discovering The Arrow. Even though he didn't really seem to be familiar with it, he gets no point because he is an Other. They seem to have a general knowledge of DHARMA, so while he may never have seen the station, he knows those stations are all over the Island.

6. No points are awarded for discovering any of the items in the chest inside The Arrow. While those items are interesting, DarkUFO and I decided that none are significant enough to count for points. It will be hard to tell what is significant in Season 4, but we'll do our best.

7. No points for Eko discovering the DHARMA film inside the Bible. We're watching these test episodes as if we were seeing them for the first time. We never saw the film, so we are to assume he just found a Bible. If we watch 2x09 (where he reveals the film to Locke) during the Hiatus League, then points will be retroactively awarded for the discovery.

8. Once you've been inside/on a DHARMA site and are aware of it, the surrounding area counts as the site itself. The Tailies spend a good bit of time hanging around outside The Arrow; it is their home base. They are still in the vicinity of The Arrow at these times. Otherwise, it will get crazy for us to keep track of who goes inside and outside of a DHARMA site. Anything within eyesight or earshot of a hatch/DHARMA station counts as being there. This also applies to visiting sites like the Black Rock and the Statue.

9. The beach that Cindy and Libby find Jin on counts as them being away from The Arrow. They got points for returning to The Arrow in the next scene.

10. After being found by Cindy and Libby, Jin does not get credit for visiting The Arrow. You have to be aware of the site/structure in order to get points for it. Jin was tied up, blindfolded and facing away from The Arrow. He never knew where he was, so he does not get points at that time. He does get points later when he, Michael and Sawyer are taken there.

11. Bernard talking to Boone, and the Tailies discovering Michael, Jin and Sawyer does NOT count as discovering new people. Yes, these are new people for the Tailies, but not for us, the viewers. People must be new to viewers in order to be points-worthy.

12. Bernard gets points for using the Numbers, even though he said eight-one-five instead of eight-fifteen. He was responding to Boone in order to be clear about the flight number. The flight number is a constructed configuration of the Numbers. It counts for points. A person counting "one, two, three, four" does NOT get points for 23 & 4 because they flow in natural order. The Numbers have to be deliberate in order for points to be awarded.

13. Jin loses points for his injuries sustained from the raft explosion/washing ashore. In Exodus Part 2, Jin has no facial injuries before the raft is attacked. When he washes ashore, he has cuts on his face. Since we saw two potential causes for these injuries (explosion or rough beach), we deduct points.

14. Injuries and deaths that are shown again in other episodes can and will be counted against that character a second time, as long as the injury/death doesn't occur in a "Previously On Lost" segment. We don't count "Previously On Lost" segments for points. But, we saw Michael, Jin and Sawyer get knocked out by Eko in 2x03 and again in 2x07. Since this same injury occurs within the runtime of both episodes, it is counted both times. Thusly, Shannon would lose points for dying twice- first in 2x06 and now again in 2x07. Similarly, Ana would receive killing deductions in both episodes.

15. When the Eko attacks Michael, Jin and Sawyer on the beach, all the Tailies can be seen in the background, so this counts as establishing a presence away from The Arrow. The next time we see any of them at The Arrow, they get fresh visitation points.

16. Cindy does NOT get points for hearing the Whispers. In this episode, we do not see her when the Whispers are going on. In fact, her absence is noted before the Whispers even start.

17. Sawyer does NOT get points for hearing the Whispers. He was unconscious and/or delirious at the time. You have to be awake in order to hear the Whispers; Sawyer was not.

18. The Tailies are given On-Island Flashback points. The episode is a long flashback to show what the Tailies had been through. No centricity points are awarded, due to the lack of a traditional flashback setup (no standard whooshing sound). Also, Michael, Jin, Sawyer and Sayid do NOT get points for appearing in another person's flashback due to the unique nature of the flashback (what I call a macro flashback- a flashback for a larger group instead of an individual). The events of the episode bring us back to the present without that whooshing sound. It's technical, but it's the final ruling.

In two weeks we'll be at it again, and we'll be returning to Season 1. Warm up your dvd players and pop in episode 1x14, Special.

This episode focuses on the strained relationship between Michael and Walt. It should feature a healthy smattering of League characters and will include the elusive Polar Bear points that are worth oh so much!

This episode will likely help some of you bounce back from any disappointment from this weeks' episode. However, if you've got a lot of Season 2 and 3 characters on your team, you may continue to be in points trouble.

Hardest Lost Quiz?

AOL recently posted the following on their Lost page claiming this to be the hardest quiz ever. I managed 9 out of 10 but thought most of the questions were fairly easy.

New Stats Section

I constantly get emails from people interested in the stats of the site, so I've just added a very simple Site Stats section that you can access from the menu.

The stats include maps of where everyone who is currently online are located along with total number of hits and most concurrent users. I hope to add more in the future.

I am deeply ashamed and embarrassed by my actions of Thursday morning. It saddens me to know that I jeopardized the welfare of the kind people of Hawaii, a community that I love and call my home.

As strike looms, 'Lost' writers prepare

Thanks to a devoted fan base, the return of ABC's "Lost" is already one of the most anticipated moments of the 2007-08 primetime. But events may well conspire to make the fourth season of the show an actual blockbuster.

ABC's serial thriller is set to return to the Alphabet in early February under terms of the deal cut last May that called for the series to wrap up in 2010 after three more seasons of 16 segs apiece.

ABC's desire to run the 16 episodes over consecutive weeks without repeats -- to keep the show's dramatic momentum going a la Fox's "24" -- dictated that fans would have to wait with bated breath for the show to bow in February rather than during the traditional fall rollout.

Now, with the threat of a writers strike becoming a more distinct possibility, "Lost" may wind up being one of the net's precious few fresh scripted offerings in the season's second half.

Because of the late premiere date, "Lost" scribes have gotten a major headstart on the writing for this season's 16 scripts, and as of October they're understood to have completed production on at least seven segs.

Interestingly, "Lost" exec producer Carlton Cuse is one of the 17 members of the Writers Guild's contract negotiating committee, though no one is conspiratorial enough to suggest he could have plotted it this way all along.

But it's probably not a coincidence that at a time when compensating writers for their work in the digital realm is one of the points of major contention between WGA and the AMPTP, "Lost" is the only TV production show to come to terms with the WGA, DGA and SAG on production of the "Lost Video Diaries" designed for mobile phones and Web plays.

Interview with Francois Chau

My friend Daniel who runs http://www.blogteoriaslost.blogspot.com has kindly let me post an short interview he conducted with Francois Chau recently. Note that Daniel kindly translated this for us into English and contains very mild spoilers.

1 Once I read an Evangeline Lilly's interview in which she said she'd need to know a little bit more about the scene she was about to play in order to make it better, to really get involved. Do the producers talk about the scene you're going to play or everything you know is actually what we see on Lost? I mean, is there any behind the scenes information?

I am just given the scene as it is written. I am not told any kind of background info on it.

2 Is there anything you know about the Orchid video that we don't know? Some of us have been wondering about that video whether it is accurate or not since the producers said that nothing is going to be answered with "time travel" concepts. Lost fans have studied about the video and they came up with the idea that they were both the same bunnies. What do you think happened on that video?

As I said, you probably know more about the scene than I do. There was no discussion as to what the scene is about. I had not thought of the "time travel" aspect, but anything is possible. "Dr. Candle" did seem to be afraid of the bunnies touching each other, if that means anything. Personally, I just thought it was some kind of cloning thing

3 We (think we) know you don't play only one character. Do you have any theory about the names? I mean, do you think they're one person faking the names?

Again, I really don't know. It was a complete surprise to me the first time "Dr. Candle" showed up as "Dr. Wickmund". I am inclined to believe that "Dr. Candle" is the main guy and that the others are "alias".

4 We were introduced to the Looking Glass station last season, no orientation film was showed, any chance we're going to see you again next year?

I was told unofficially that "Dr. Candle" will be feature more prominently, if not in the coming season, then , in the next. Who knows if that's true or not.

5 I read you watch the show when you can, especially when your friend Yunjin is in it: do you have any theory about what's going on or what's coming next?

I have no ideas about what's going on.

6 Having an eye on Nestor Carbonell (Richard Alpert on Lost), whom we are not going to see much next year because he is now on another show and some news in which I see most of the actors have parallel business: could you tell us how do the producers deal with the contract? Are they free to do whatever they want apart from Lost? In addiction, what do you think about it?

I don't know what kind of contracts, if any, the producers have with the actors who play recurring characters on the show. It's possible that some are under contract for a guaranteed certain number of shows. Some could have started out as just a one shot deal and then were brought back. In any case, I believe everyone is free to pursue other work, especially if they are not under contract.

7 Anything you'd like to share with us about the fans? Do they look scared or curious at you or even ask any question? :P

The "LOST" fans are incredible! I have gotten many letters and e-mails from all over the world, and they have all been incredibly kind and supportive. They are all also very curious as to what is really going on. I feel bad that I have no info to give them. The fans I meet in person are also the same. "Can you tell me any secrets?" is what I'm always asked.

'Lost' actor Daniel Dae Kim arrested for DUI

Thanks to Hoku for the following sad news.

Daniel Dae Kim, who stars as Jin-Soo Kwon on ABC's hit TV series "Lost," was arrested early this morning for allegedly driving drunk.

Details of his DUI arrest haven't been released yet, but police said he was arrested around 3 a.m. He was booked at the Honolulu Police station downtown, posted bail and was released at 5:05 a.m.

Kim didn't say anything as he left the station while being ushered by two police officers to a mini van that was waiting for him just outside the police station's receiving area.

Wearing a polo shirt, kaki shorts and his hair growing out, Kim kept his head down as he brushed past media, stepping into the front passenger's side of the mini van, which quickly whisked him away.

Kim's arrest isn't the first DUI or run in with police for stars of the hit TV series.

Some of the other notable brushes with the law include former cast members Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros both being arrested for drunk driving on Dec. 1, 2005 when police spotted their vehicles weaving along Pali Highway.

Both pleaded guilty, and both were gone from the show by season's end.

On Sept. 2, 2006, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje ("Mr. Eko") was arrested for disobeying a police officer and driving without a license. The charges were later dropped when Akinnuoye-Agbaje provided proof that he possessed a license. He he was killed off the show by a smoke-monster in the first half of that season.

Need your help

As you may have noticed Dailymotion deleted my account today and I've already had several accounts on YouTube deleted. All the major video hosting sites are hunting down people who post episode clips and trailers and as we get so many hits we get noticed a lot. With Season 4 around a rather long corner I thought I better start looking for a new approach.

First please try the video player below to see if it works. The videos will be held on my own server and won't disappear anymore without warning. Please vote on the poll as to how you got on and if it does not work can you leave a comment as to any problems you have.

DarkUFO Lost Fantasy League Q&A: Week 1

REMINDER: Do not post spoiler inclusive questions in the comments section! If you know or think your question involves Season 4 spoilers, email DarkUFO directly.

Well, things seem to have worked pretty well on the whole for the first week of the Hiatus League. DarkUFO and I have read all your comments and questions and we hope to use your input and queries to improve the way we operate the league come February. The biggest help that the Hiatus League gives to me is in the scoring department. Through these 8 episodes that we’ll be watching, I should be able to narrow down and eliminate any grey areas regarding each points category. This will help all of you, the contestants, as well, in that it will give you a better understanding of what counts for points. This should help minimize any controversy and make the league enjoyable for all.

That being said, let’s get to your questions! The questions are in bold-italic, with my answers below them. These questions came either from the comment section or from your emails.

What about Claire's mini flashback when she scratched Rousseau?

This is a tough question. During Exodus Part 2, Rousseau returns to the beach and kidnaps Aaron. Before she knocks out Claire, Mother Littleton has what some consider a ‘flash’ showing us that at some point in the past she injured Rousseau’s forearm by scratching Danielle with her fingernails.

This little segment is very open to interpretation. We know now, after seeing Claire remember the time of her captivity, that she did indeed scratch Rousseau’s arm badly. But was that little scene a flashback?

I did not interpret that scene as a flashback. I have always considered it to be Claire remembering the incident. There haven’t been many situations where people have simply remembered something in a quick flash, but that’s how I’ve always understood Claire’s “flash” in Exodus Part 2. I guess I probably look at it that way because it’s so short and the way it was shot seemed differently than what we’re accustomed to for flashbacks. This ruling is just me going with my instincts. Hope that's okay.



Why didn't Kate, Hurley, Jack, and Locke receive +15 for visiting the Black Rock?

Answering this question will help me address a few of the quirks with points being awarded to visiting Island locations (Black Rock, the Statue, DHARMA place). Points are awarded each time a character visits one of these locations. However, the start of a new episode does not mean the start of a new visit.

The A-Team discovered the Black Rock at the end of Exodus Part 1. This began their visit to the ship. The events in Exodus Part 2 are a continuation of that visit. Had they wandered back into the woods looking for Rousseau and then come back to the Black Rock, then they would have been credited with an additional visit and would have received points.

Characters have to establish some sort of presence away from these locations before coming back in order to get points for an extra visit. We have to either see Jack somewhere other than the Black Rock before he goes there, or it has to be established in dialogue. If we know that Jack has been at the beach all day because he was there in the previous episode or because someone else mentions it, and then shows up at the Black Rock, then Jack gets visitation points. As a counter-example, take Jack’s time spent on Hydra Island. He would get points in 3x01 for visiting another DHARMA place, but he never established a presence anywhere else during that time, so he’d pick up points only once during the 9-episode stretch that he was on Hydra Island.

I’m being a little picky about this, mostly because Lost is not a procedural show or one where one week’s episode has little impact on the next. Lost is one long, continuous story where each chapter affects the next in some way, so I am scoring it as one long story.



What about Locke, Kate, Jack and Hurley visiting the hatch? Why is it not considered a Dharma station?

Sure, we know now (and knew during Season 2) that the thing we spent half of Season 1 looking at and wondering about is a DHARMA station, but during Season 1, we did not know. During the Hiatus League, I will be scoring the episodes as if I were watching them for the very first time.

I believe this makes me appear to be a hypocrite as I said that I checked to see if the black smoke fire lit by the Others ever became a significant location, cutting Sayid out of a possible 20 points. But, here’s the scoop- during the regular season, if I or DarkUFO have any doubts as to whether or not the discovery of a place or a thing should get points, we will not award them at the time. If those locations and items do become important, we will award those points retroactively. We feel it is better to err on the side of caution. Better to get points an episode or two late than to have them taken away.



You missed some points!! Lostpedia says that Hurley was staying in room 2342 and you can see it when he’s leaving the hotel. That should be 20 more points for Hurley!!!

During the hotel scenes I did look closely to see if anyone was staying in a room with the Numbers involved, but I totally missed Hurley’s room #2342. It goes by that fast. I watched this episode 3 or 4 times before declaring the scores final. It’s easier to spot them when you know they’re there, but two rules of thumb for you:

1) If I’ve watched the episode 3 or 4 times and STILL haven’t caught it, no points will be given.

2) If it goes by so quickly that I need to go through the scene frame by frame to catch it, no points will be given. If I can’t spot it at normal play speed, then you guys lose out. I have a life, you know. :-)

Both of these rules can be over-ridden by DarkUFO at any time, seeing as he owns the place. :-) But, if neither of us manages to catch something, then no points will be given.

So no extra 20 points for Hugo. Besides, isn’t 80 points in an episode for the Numbers enough? :-P



Why didn’t anybody get centricity points for the episode?

Centricity points will only be given out if a character has more than two flashbacks in an episode. In a multi-flashback episode, such as Exodus Part 2, nobody had more than one flashback, so nobody gains centricity points.

Another thing about centricity vs. flashback points- During a multi-flashback episode, characters got points based on their individual flashbacks. However, points will not be given out for individual flashbacks during character-centric episodes. When the flashbacks are character-centric, points are awarded once for the style of flashback the character had during the whole episode. The character will be getting centricity points on top of it though.



I bet some people will be frustrated with this hiatus league in the sense that we picked our characters in anticipation of season 4, not seasons 1-3. What do you guys think?

Well, yes, people may get frustrated to find themselves doing poorly during the Hiatus League, but it’s nothing to get bent out of shape over. Your performance in the Hiatus League is by no means indicative of how you may perform during Season 4.



In the table you guys should show what place we were the week before, as well as our current place so we can compare.

DarkUFO is the master behind the spreadsheets and technology that makes this league work. I believe he has come up with a way to make that happen. :-)



I think we should be able to change our Richard picks since he might not be on the show :)

Sorry, no such luck. We included Richard in the League even though we knew Nestor Carbonell was involved with the popular new show Cane. In a sense, we were gambling, because we knew there was a chance that Cane would be a success (which looks to be the case) but that it could have bombed and Lost would gets its Alpert back. By including Richard, we were letting you all gamble by taking that very same risk, and 25% of you were willing to risk it. It’s still possible that we may see Richard in Season 4, so don’t fret too much.



Where can I find the "You all Everybody" track?

I got the version of “You All Everybody” that I used to open and close the video update from a special mini-CD that came with an issue of TV Guide that gave a preview of Season 2. (For those of you who don’t know what TV Guide is, it’s basically like a weekly magazine that has all the TV listings for the upcoming week in it, plus exclusive stories)

The song was on that CD and I copied it to my computer and have no clue where the CD ever got to. The track does not appear on either the Season 1 or 2 soundtracks, and I couldn't find it on iTunes. So I have no clue where you can snag a copy. Anybody have any guesses?



I liked the podcast, didn't think it was too long. Loved the Driveshaft music. But could g-man refrain from slapping his knee so much?

LOL! As soon as I read this, I immediately thought of how many times I undoubtedly slapped my leg while talking to the camera. I figured that the count had to be somewhere in the 20s. Boy was I wrong! After watching the video again and keeping track of all the audible leg slaps, I counted over 50!!! That’s even too many times to create a safe drinking game.

Well, I apologize for all the leg-slapping. That just happens to be one of my nervous tics, along with tilting my head from side to side or looking down, when I’m trying to think of what to say. I relied a little too heavily on my ability to wing it. I was in a bit of a rush when making the video and incredibly nervous. It’s not everyday that you make a video of yourself that will be seen by thousands of people! :-P

In the future, the videos will be much shorter and cover just the biggest winner and loser for each of the seven groups. I won’t get into specifics much, since we’ll be posting specifics later on. This should cut down on video time and will also help me script out what to say a little more. And I’ll make a conscious effort to avoid slapping my leg. :-)

Now of course, DarkUFO has the right to override anything I've said here and lay down any super-final rulings. But, this is all pretty much in line with our discussions while setting up the league.

Lost Hiatus Fantasy League Week 1

Introduction
Here we go folks- the Hiatus Fantasy League is under way! Over the next three and a half months we will have the opportunity to test out all the fun technology that will make the Season 4 Fantasy League work. As mentioned before, there will be 8 episodes involved in this Hiatus League, with video updates every two weeks. This will give you all a chance to revisit old episodes and try your hand at keeping score for yourself and then comparing against the official score, determined by me.

The first episode for the Hiatus League was Exodus Part 2, the 2-hour Season 1 finale. It was a strong episode that dished out plenty of points, despite a large amount of character absenteeism. I want to warn you that the video on your left is very long and it may take a while for it to load. Please be patient with us during this testing phase. There will be many improvements made via our observations and your feedback. Future Updates will be much shorter too. :-)

The following is the episode recap and scoring data for all the characters for Week 1 of the Hiatus League. The episode I watched was 1x24- Exodus Part 2.

Exodus Part 2 (in 500 words or less)

The A-Team plus Arzt are just as confused as we were that the Black Rock is a boat and not, in fact, a rock. Danielle takes off, while Jack, Kate and Locke go looking for the dynamite in the ship’s hold, leaving Hurley to kick it outside with Arzt. Interloper Arzt succeeds in whining about his ex-wife and going on a tongue-in-cheek tirade about how important everyone who’s not in the main cast is. He then succeeds at belittling the very people he longs for acceptance from and gives a tedious lecture on the importance of dynamite-handling safety, which comes to an abrupt end as he blows himself to bits.

While Jack and Locke are left to wipe all the Arzt off their shirts and play Operation with the boomsticks, Danielle emerges back on the beach, coldcocks Claire and absconds with Aaron. After a pinch of exposition and some psychobabble from Sayid as to why Charlie shouldn’t carry a gun, they race off into the jungle after the freaky French chick. On the way, Charlie lags behind and gets hurt by one of Rousseau’s traps. Sayid makes a quick fix of this by cauterizing the wound with gunpowder. Ouch.

Not much is happening on the raft until they manage to sail directly into the path of very large, hard-to-miss piece of driftwood. Sawyer rescues the rudder, sans shirt.

While carrying back the dynamite, the A-Team (now minus Arzt) gets attacked by a very noisy puff of black smoke. Locke lets it drag him away like a crazy person, but Jack saves Jungle John before he gets sucked down into a hole in the ground. They make it back to the Hatch and prepare to blow the lid off this thing, literally. Hurley sees the Numbers on the side of the hatch and freaks out. He nearly pulls an Arzt, but Jack saves the day and they dive for cover.

Charlie and Sayid rescue Aaron, who Rousseau wanted to trade to the Others in exchange for her long-lost daughter, Alex. Meanwhile, the raft folk get attacked by the Others, Walt is taken, and the raft is destroyed. We’re left hanging until Season 2 with a shot of Jack and Locke staring down through the hatch door, which reveals a very long shaft accompanied by a very broken ladder.

In flashbacks we see our beloved characters as they make their way to the airport and on board Oceanic Flight 815.

CORRECTION: In the video I state that 22 characters failed to appear in the episode. This is false. Only 21 characters failed to appear in the episode. Rousseau, with her deductions makes 22 total characters who lost points for the week.

Exodus Part 2 was a very eventful episode, doling out 440 total points. Here's how those points break down:

Unfortunately for most of you, this episode features virtually none of the regular cast, which means we're in for a very low scoring affair! If you had a weak performance in Week 1 and had your hopes up for bouncing back in Week 2, you may be out of luck.

Then again, the Hiatus League doesn't count for much more than bragging rights, as you all picked your teams based on how you thought they would perform in Season 4.

"Lost": The weight of the wait

Interesting article from Variety.

It happened about a week ago. I was on duty, sifting through a stack of screeners of second and third episodes of fall series, not feeling particularly eager to view any of them, and as my thoughts wandered I felt a pang of "Hey, wait a minute..." excitement.


The new season is underway, I thought, and that means fresh segs of "Lost" are coming soon...


For a split second, my mind raced, my heart soared and I lunged toward my computer to look up the premiere date. And then it hit me. Four. More. Months. Or at least three and a half. "Lost" won't be back until early February. (I knew that already, of course, but after watching too many screeners in a row you often have to smack yourself upside the head to get the synapses firing properly again.)


It's going to be worth the wait, no doubt. Our heroes -- "Lost" exec producer/co-creator Damon Lindelof and exec producer Carlton Cuse -- are using the time to painstakingly map out the flight plan for "Lost's" remaining 48 episodes. "Lost's" chief creative stewards and ABC announced an agreement back in May to bring the show to an end in 2010 end after three more seasons of 16 episodes apiece.


ABC's decision to sked the show "24"-style without repeats over consecutive weeks makes perfect sense -- ergo, the February preem date. It's all very logical and forward-thinking, but when we were applauding these decisions a few months ago, I don't think any of us rabid fans had a clue how tortuous it would be to have to wait so long. Drat and Deuteronomy!


But it's just my luck that Lindelof and Cuse were cool and kind enough to respond to a pleading email from a jones-ing fan. The two got on the horn last week to discuss how their work process has changed in the new 48-episode world order.


"The biggest change is that it gives us the benefit of being able to plot and plan the remaining mythology of the show," Cuse says.


Before there was a pre-determined end date, "it was always tricky for us to figure out how fast it could all unspool. This allows us to do a lot of macro-planning, and more opportunities to organize and strategize."


At the end of last season, when the "Lost" scribes held their annual post-mortem before the summer hiatus, they began to think about how the long-term stories will unfold over 48 more hours. Each of the three remaining seasons has to have its own beginning, middle and end, natch, but now in the plotting of those 16-seg batches "we can draw back on a macro-level and begin to plant certain story ideas. We have a much better sense of how the 'Lost' mosaic will be filled in," Cuse says.


The later on-air start means that the writers will be almost done with the scripts for all 16 episodes by the time series bows. Writers went back at it in mid-July; shooting began in August and they expect to be in production on segs 12 and 13 by the time the first one rolls in February. (Unless, of course, there's a work stoppage among Hollywood scribes, which would be a horrorshow unto itself.)


And as such, "Lost's" scribe tribe will have much less flexibility in the coming frame to "course-correct," as Lindelof puts it. He and Cuse were quite candid and humble in acknowledging the complaints of fans about the tight focus of the storytelling in the first seven episodes of last season. (Not enough of the ensemble! the fans howled). And when they intro'd characters, Nikki and Paolo, who fell flat with the fan-o-sphere, the writers responded by promptly burying them alive. Primetime TV doesn't get much more interactive than that.


In truth, Lindelof sez they're not too worried about running afoul of fans, because the writers' room collectively has a pretty good sense of when things are clicking -- and when they're not -- at any given moment during production.


"We had the feeling with Nikki and Paolo that it wasn't right about a month before the fans started reacting," Lindelof says matter-of-factly. "We were already starting to think, 'Maybe our instinct here has been wrong.'"


Lindelof notes that "Lost's" storytelling quirks presents huge challenges, particularly at the start of each season. There's no "Four months later" title slate that can set up a new frame of reference for characters or the plot. Even Fox's "24" gets to hit the reset button at the start of each season. But on "Lost," the season opener by necessity takes place moments after the credits rolled on the previous season's finale.


"It can be hard to hit the ground running," Lindelof admits. "It's not like we can say 'Well, it's another year at Hogwarts,' or we have the ability to scatter our characters around to new situations. If there's a backlash (among fans) in our show it usually comes from how we start out."


Now that the finish line is in sight, Lindelof and Cuse have a much better grip on the stories they need to tell and how the threads they've laid out so far need to weave together. It's unlikely they would've attempted the flash-forward sequence featuring Jack and Kate in last season's two-hour finale if they were still uncertain about their end-date, Lindelof says.


Telling stories in the past, the present and, starting with last season's finale, the near future is also a high-wire act, Lindelof observes. It would've been reckless to present a vision of the future without having a firm grip on where their characters are heading.


"In most dramas the story takes you from point A to B to C. On our show you go from A to B, an then we go, 'Here, look at V...and then let's go back to C.' You can't just take those detours if you don't have a good sense of where your big story beats are," says Lindelof.


So did their grand plan for the characters change after they got the 48-and-out order from ABC in May? Or have they always had the broad strokes of the plot in mind, and now the focus is on story structures and pacing? These probing questions (which they've been asked a few thousand times before) were met with a pause, and then a Kerouac-ian response from Cuse.


"It's like you're taking a road trip from L.A. to New York," Cuse says. "You know you're going to end up in New York. But now you look at your itinerary and you know that you're going to be in Cleveland on these three nights, and you're going to be in Detroit on these two nights..."


Lindelof allowed that the show and its characters have taken on their own life at several points in the series' run so far. He pointed to the additions of Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet and Michael Emerson as Ben as situations where the actors were so good in the roles that the writers had little choice but to expand their storylines beyond their initial plans.


"Ben was supposed to be in three episodes of season two," Lindelof says. "Now it's impossible to (imagine) the show without him."


Taking those kind of unexpected twists and turns is a big part of the creative turn-on of episodic television, Cuse says.


"A TV series is like an organic entity," he says. "You have your plans, you steer it and tell it what to do, and sometimes it tells you what to do. Seeing those things (on screen) that you don't expect -- that's the exciting part."


With the lag time between production and premiere this season, the "Lost" writers must be working in bunker-like conditions in an effort to keep the plot leakage to a minimum, no?


Yes and no. Yes, they have clamped down "enormously" this year on the distribution of show materials outside of need-to-know circles, Cuse says. All of the casting info they circulate is based on extreme generalities, or in some cases, out and out deceptions.


"We always write fake sides for the stuff we send to talent agencies and (casting) breakdowns," Cuse says. "We are casting characters under false pretenses...We come up with things that are analogous to the roles we really want."


As for internal security concenrs, Lindelof and Cuse say they expect everyone on their core staff to act professionally and responsibly. Spoilers are going to happen -- there's no getting around that when people make a sport out of staking out the show's production sites in Hawaii with telephoto lenses.


Lindelof and Cuse bank on the fact that "Lost's" true-blue fans eschew the many spoiler-info sources out there in favor of enjoying the viewing experience to the hilt, and learning plot points the way nature intended them to be disseminated.


"You're only going to see 'The Sixth Sense' for the first time once. There's only going to be one time when you watch the movie and not know that Bruce Willis is really dead," says Lindelof. "That's what we pride ourselves on doing in our show, those kind of twists and turns that grab you. I think there's a lot of responsibility to be taken on the part of the fans, and on the part of the press, to not destroy the viewing experience for people."


At the same time, because of the fandemonium that the show inspires, it behooves them to sprinkle out a few tidbits during the off season, out of respect for the passion people have for the show and because complete radio silence only encourages the search for spoilers, Lindelof believes.


They to be savvy about managing the news they know won't hold, such as actor Harold Perrineau's return as a regular next season. Lindelof says they announced it at Comic-Con with much fanfare -- and an appearance by Perrineau -- because the July confab was the perfect setting to unleash such fan-pleasing news (though the official word got out a few days before after ABC boss Steve McPherson dropped a hint and then got into a tussle with reporters during the Television Critics Assn. press tour.)


At Comic-Con, "Lost's" dynamic duo also preemed another tantalizing Dharma Initiative black-and-white training film with the haughty scientist who's name is never the same.


Lindelof sez they're also excited about an upcoming series of exclusive original "Lost" shorts coming to mobile platforms through ABC's deal with Verizon (I'm guessing they'll also wind up on ABC.com and/or iTunes at some point) and will be rolled out in a serialized fashion as part of the build up to the season four premiere. The shorts, featuring regular "Lost" players and produced under WGA, DGA and SAG auspices, will provide fans with a glimpse of "some really interesting 'Lost' puzzle pieces," Lindelof promises.

Iconic Lost Tree burnt down

We bring you sad news today. We just received a photograph from our friends at Kos Hummer Lost Tours that the iconic tree in Mokule'ia has been burned down.

This is the tree that Jack saw his father standing under it in Ep 1x04 Walkabout, and it has been seen repeatedly in future episodes. Mikhail was seen standing near it when he was shooting at Charlie in the boat near the end of this past Season 3.

We haven't looked at the burn site ourselves, so we don't know if this was mischief or an unfortunately placed campfire, as the coastal area is often used recreationally by late night fishermen, ATVers, and local families on holiday.

UPDATE: Ed from Kos Tours indicated that the fire looked deliberate. What a bummer either way.

The Hiatus Fantasy League

I've had loads of emails asking what we're planning on doing to fill the last 3 and a half months of this seeming endless Hiatus. A lot of you have asked for some more polls/cups and too be honest I'm a little cupped out at the moment (although there will be 1 more before S4 starts).

However, I've been talking with G-Man about an idea I had that should be a lot of fun as well as giving both G-Man and myself some practise for the Season 4 Fantasy League next year. So we've decided to run a mini fantasy league during the remainder of the Hiatus.

Here are the details:

1) Every 2 weeks we will pick 1 random episode from the 1st 3 seasons.
2) G-Man will collate the points based on the points system for the Season 4 Fantasy League
3) We will then use your EXISTING picks to work out your points each week and publish the results.
4) We will then let you know what the next episode to be picked is so that you can then try to work out your points and see how well you do.
5) We know that you made your picks based on what you thought would happen in Season 4 but this is the best way for us to test everything and it's just for fun so don't come bugging us ;)
6) We will run this for a total of 8 Episodes which should take us to just before the Season 4 premiere.

This will enable both of us to make sure there are no problems with our database and spreadsheets and that the reporting and publishing of the tables goes smoothly. We will be looking for any suggestions for improvements in the reporting format so that by the time we get to Season 4 proper we hope to have an extensive stats package each week so that you can track your progress easily.

I have selected the first episode that G-Man will watch and collate points for and that will be Exodus - Part 2. This and the other 7 will all be picked randomly by my virtual hat so don't blame me if your character kills someone ;)

We hope to have the first set of results up next week.

Mr. Eko is drawing on bark with a stone. Ana Lucia arrives and suggests borrowing a pen for it. Mr. Eko does not want this, and then does not agree with Jack's plan to attack the Others. Mr. Eko believes they may be safe here, and then Ana Lucia asks where the man who killed two of them. Mr. Eko coldly replies, "He is right here, sitting beside a tree, talking to you." This scene was deleted from "Fire + Water".

Yesterdays 3rd place playoff was a rather one-sided affair with the Swan Station Computer beating Eko's Stick buy a 70/30 margin. Today sees the Final matchup between 2 of my personal favourites from the Series so far.
