Prop Cup 2009 - Summary

It always seems to be the case that cup finals (whether it be the Character Cup, Episode Cup or Prop Cup) end up being incredibly close. This year's Prop Cup 2009 final has been no exception. The Swan Station Countdown Timer and the Four Toed Statue have battled hard these last couple of days, each holding their own in a photo finish finale that gathered almost 4000 votes.

There can of course be only one winner, and with a win margin of just 2%, clawing it's way to victory, but having held the lead for the vast majority of this final match, and claiming this year's Prop Cup crown, is...

The FOUR TOED STATUE!

Somewhat amazingly, the Swan Station didn't dominate the final four this year. In previous cups, the Swan has always held 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Nevertheless, the Swan stands tall yet again, taking 2nd and 4th place. Well done to the Frozen Donkey Wheel for sticking in there and taking 3rd, and of course to the Four Toed Statue, for enduring the month long battle and taking the gold.

We hope that you enjoyed taking part in this cup, and we also hope that it helped to lessen the monotonous ache that is the hiatus. With just a couple more months until the Season 6 premiere of LOST, the plentiful spoilers will have to tide us over until then.

You can click on the button below for a tiny bit of info on next year's cup, as well as a 'thoughts' poll.

Next year will mark the last ever LOST Prop Cup. Sad isn't it? But all fun things must come to an end. Guaranteed a spot in next year's cup, due to their placings, are:

Eko's Stick
Radzinsky's Blast Door Map
Swan Station Countdown Timer
Swan Station Computer Terminal
Locke's Compass
Four Toed Statue
The Mysterious Cabin
The Hatch Door
The Black Rock
Black & White Stones
Fuselage Wreckage
Frozen Donkey Wheel

Depending on how many Season 6 props deem worthy of featuring in the 2010 Prop Cup, other 2009 props may also make the cut (high probability of that). Also, we may decide to do things a little differently next year, but we'll see.

Also, it will be worth touching upon this. Some has been said about the Statue not being an actual prop, in that it is mostly CGI created. The decider, for us, was that the statue was in fact sculptured by Jim Van Houten, as a physical piece, and used as the reference for what we see in the show.

Lastly, we just wanted to know if you are happy with the final 4 results.

Have a good one, enjoy your holiday season, and roll on Season 6!

It is finally time to decide which prop will stand victorious, as the winner of the Prop Cup 2009. We have our 3rd and 4th places decided (Congrats to the Frozen Donkey Wheel by the way), which leaves only 1st and 2nd. Which prop deserves to win? Time to vote.

This poll will run for two days, after which the final results will be displayed in full.

Prop Cup 2009 - Round 3, Matches 1 & 2

Welcome back. Round 3 is set to run for just three days. It is somewhat of a mini-round of voting, before the quarter finals and subsequent finals. There are some very tough choices to be made, so have a good think about which props you'd like to see advance. Which props do you think best represent the show? Which stand out to you as being iconic and instantly recognisable?

Match 1: I won't bore you with lengthily descriptions again this round. Eko's scripture stick sees competition in the form of the "Jughead" bomb, last year's competition winner the Swan Station Countdown Timer, and Locke's wheelchair.

Match 2: The ancient mural of Smokey & Anubis goes up against Locke's paradox compass, Charlie's Driveshaft ring, and the ominous Hatch Door.

Prop Cup 2009 - Round 2, Matches 11 & 12

Update - Round 2 is now over, with Round 3 set to begin on Sunday. Congratulations to yesterday's winners, and to all of the props proceeding on to Round 3. The match-ups are about to get painfully difficult.

Props going through: Frozen Donkey Wheel, Virgin Mary Statues, Swan Station Countdown Timer, Fuselage Wreckage, Daniel's Journal, Charlie's FATE, the Photo of Desmond & Penny, the Mural of Smokey & Anubis, the Driveshaft Ring, the "Jughead" Bomb, Sawyer's Letter, Eko's Stick, Four Toed Statue, Swan Station Computer Terminal, the Hatch Door, Charlie's Guitar, Locke's Wheelchair, Jacob's Tapestry, the Mysterious Cabin, Swan Station Orientation Film, the Black Rock, the Black & White Stones, Radzinsky's Blast Door Map, and Locke's Compass.

Match 11: The Black Rock was a trading ship supposedly heading for Thailand, from Portsmouth in England. It became shipwrecked on the mysterious island, and somehow ended up considerably far inland, surrounded by forest. The ship provided our Losties with dynamite, and it was also the setting for the long awaited Sawyer/Sawyer confrontation. The Dharma Submarine, known as the Galaga, was used as a means for Dharma personnel to travel between the island and the real world. It was later used by "the Others" to fit the same purpose. The submarine was supposedly destroyed by Locke. Danielle's maps of the island contain detailed information about the island. She created the maps during her time stranded on the island. Sayid later acquired the maps (stole them) and Shannon was able to translate some of the text on the maps. The Black & White Stones were discovered within the island caves. The stones were found in the possession of two corpses, referred to as Adam and Eve. Black & White is a common theme throughout Lost.

Match 12: The Swan Station Wall Mural is a large painting illustrating a number of various different objects, colours and numbers. Most notably, it depicts the number 108, a large eye, and what appears to be a struggle between two people. Jacob's Fire Pit is located within the secret confines of Jacob's statue home. It sits at the centre of his dwelling. During the confrontation between Jacob, Flocke and Ben, Jacob's lifeless body was kicked into the fiery pit. Radzinsky's Blast Door Map contains detailed information about the Dharma Initiative stations. After Radzinsky "blew his brains out", hatch partner Kelvin took over the duty of completing the map. The map appeared to Locke during a frantic scene involving a complete lockdown of the Swan Station. Locke memorized the map and used the information to his advantage. Locke's Compass is a paradox that appears to defy the laws of time. It was passed from Richard to Locke, then back to Richard, and then back to Locke again - all during the time jumps. What this seems to imply is that the compass never had a beginning, as least not within the time line we have witnessed.

Prop Cup 2009 - Round 2, Matches 9 & 10

Congratulations go to the Four Toed Statue, the Swan Station Computer Terminal, the Hatch Door, and Charlie's Guitar.

As always, feel free to comment via the blog, and you can also partake in a more in-depth discussion via the forum - Prop Cup 2009 Discussion Thread

Match 9: Within the stone walls of his statue home, Jacob wove a large tapestry portraying the winged eye of Horus. Servants kneel before the eye. The tapestry also features harvest workers and sail ships. When Desmond first arrived on the island, he was approached by a man (named Kelvin) in a bright yellow hazmat suit, then taken to the hatch. Desmond later found that the hazmat suit was to protect from illness on the island, which turned out to be a lie. During the island flashes, Daniel and Desmond had an exchange, in which Desmond was wearing the hazmat suit. Jeremy Bentham's coffin revealed to us the true identity of Jeremy Bentham, in a scene that shocked and stunned viewers. Locke's wheelchair represents Locke's life before the island. It represents his struggles since losing the ability of his legs. The wheelchair was his bane, and prevented him from pursuing his dreams. After arriving on the island and miraculously regaining his ability to walk, he decided to burn the wheelchair in the fuselage fire.

Match 10: The mysterious cabin, once referred to as Jacob's cabin, seemed to appear and disappear at its choosing. The cabin was supposedly built by Horace, and was the setting to many interesting scenes, the most recent of which involved Ilana and her group burning the cabin down. Many theorize that the cabin was a prison. The freighter ship was sent to seek out the island by a certain Mr. Charles Widmore. The personnel on board were hired by Widmore for their particular expertise. The intentions of some of Widmore's recruits were a little less than favourable, which ultimately led to the destruction of the freighter ship. The Swan Station Orientation film was our first real glimpse at the people behind the scientific island structures; the Dharma Initiative. Narrated by "Dr. Marvin Candle", the film offered a brief history of the initiative, as well as the purpose and procedures of the Swan Station. The Nigerian plane was intended to smuggle heroin out of the country, but fate had it crash onto the island. The plane was discovered by Locke and Boone. Boone lost his life to the plane, the onboard heroin offered up a challenge for Charlie, and Eko was eventually reunited with his brother, Yemi.

Prop Cup 2009 - Round 2, Matches 7 & 8

Congratulations to yesterday's winners; the "Jughead" bomb, the Driveshaft Ring, Sawyer's Letter, and Eko's Stick.

As always, feel free to comment via the blog, and you can also partake in a more in-depth discussion via the forum - Prop Cup 2009 Discussion Thread

Match 7: The Orchid Station Orientation Video introduced Locke to the notion of time travel. In the video, Pierre Chang ("Dr. Edgar Halliwax") makes mention of space and time, negatively charged "exotic matter", and electromagnetic energy. He is about to explain a demonstration on a bunny rabbit, but the video begins to rewind uncontrollably. The Circle of Ash is just that, and it formed a large circle around the mysterious cabin. It is thought that the ash acted as a boundary to keep someone or something at bay, like a prison. During Ilana and Bram's discovery of the cabin in Season 5, it was found that the circle of ash had been disturbed. The Four Toed Statue was first spotted by Sun, Sayid and Jin during their scouting mission. We didn't know then just how significant the statue was, but we now know it to be the home of Jacob. Prior to its destruction, the statue stood in the form of Egyptian goddess Taweret. An ankh was held in each hand. The Swan Station Computer Terminal was the bane of Desmond's island existence. It kept him confined to the Swan Station, having to input a series of numbers every 108 minutes in order to "save the world". Prior to Desmond's arrival on the island, it was Kelvin's job to push the button, and before that Radzinsky's. Later, Locke would take over the duty, but it was ultimately Locke that led to the computer's destruction, as well as the destruction of the station itself.

Match 8: Charlie's Guitar is another of Charlie's prized possessions. It was used as a bargaining chip, by Locke, to help Charlie move passed his drug addiction. Locke's Suicide Letter held a simple and powerful message. It was addressed to Jack, and simply said "I wish you had believed me". One of the most prominent questions at the moment is, who and what are Jacob and his adversary? They first appeared to us during a rather cryptic scene, in which they were wearing their respective shirts; one light, one dark. Are the white shirt and black shirt significant to their intentions? Or are we, the viewers, being misled. The Hatch Door was inadvertently discovered by Boone. It was one of our first major clues that the island was more than it seemed. After failed attempts at trying to open the door, it was Boone's death that led Locke to the brink of despair. It was during that time that a beam of light shot up from the hatch door, renewing Locke's faith.

Prop Cup 2009 - Round 2, Matches 5 & 6

A big congratulations go to Daniel's Journey, Charlie's FATE, the Photo of Desmond and Penny, and the Mural of Smokey and Anubis.

As always, feel free to comment via the blog, and you can also partake in a more in-depth discussion via the forum - Prop Cup 2009 Discussion Thread

Match 5: The Jughead was one of the centrepieces of Season 5. "Bury it", Daniel told his mother, which they did, only then for the bomb to be resurrected as part of a daring plan to alter the timeline of the island and indeed the world. Did it work? We shall see. One of Charlie's cherished possessions, the Driveshaft ring remained with him for his stay on the show, before being passed down to Aaron. We eventually found out that it wasn't a tour ring at all, but a ring representative of "Dexter Stratton". We still don't know what is/was inside Hurley's guitar case, only that it was passed on to him by Jacob. Some theorize that it contains something vitally important, whilst others think that it was merely a floatation device for when Hurley flashed into the island lagoon. Old time favourite, Michael's Raft, was built by Michael, Jin and Sawyer, and was intended as a means of salvation. The first raft got toasted, but the second raft had a successful launch. Hopes were shattered when the raft was intercepted by The Others, and Walt was kidnapped. The Raft was mostly destroyed by an explosive.

Match 6: Following the crash of Oceanic flight 815, the tail end survivors got the worst of it. Eko was forced to kill, in order to protect his fellow survivors, and as a result he created what we now refer to as Eko's Stick, or the Jesus Stick. It is a stick upon which he inscribed scriptures from the bible. Following Eko's death, the stick offered Locke the inspiration and knowledge that he needed to continue on his journey. Ben's ninja baton has appeared a few times, but the most notable appearance was in the Tunisia desert. Ben was approached by two armed men on horseback and forced to surrender. But surrender he did not. He flipped open his baton and put to work his incredible close-combat fighting skills. Sawyer's Letter defines the journey of Sawyer's character. Written as a child, the letter remained with him throughout his entire life. It was his every intention to deliver the letter to "Mr. Sawyer" personally, and then to get his revenge. Perhaps it was indeed fate that eventually brought our Sawyer and Anthony Cooper together. Within the darkened confines of the Black Rock ship, Sawyer was finally able to get his closure. The Apollo Chocolate bar is one of those props that doesn't hold a massive significance, but it doesn't need to, because it is instantly recognisable as being a part of the LOST universe. Not only that, but it is probably one of the single most recognisable pieces of the show.

Prop Cup 2009 - Round 2, Matches 3 & 4

Congratulations go to the Frozen Donkey Wheel, the Virgin Mary Statues, the Swan Station Countdown Timer, and the Fuselage Wreckage. They all proceed through to Round 3.

As always, feel free to comment via the blog, and you can also partake in a more in-depth discussion via the forum - Prop Cup 2009 Discussion Thread

Match 1: Room 23 was an unforgettable Lost location, and what better prop to represent the room than the glowing blue brainwashing glasses. The Orchid Station time travel pod was designed to harness the special properties of the island, or more specifically the frozen wheel. One small hop for a white rabbit, one giant leap for the Dharma Initiative. Daniel's Journal contained much mathematical knowledge, a lot of which seems to pertain to the island itself, but it was "Desmond Hume will be MY constant" that played a significant role in our understanding of the show. Charlie's FATE, or LATE, was perhaps our first real hint that the fates of our Losties were already decided. These tiny finger decorations would later act as a breadcrumb trail, in the search for a certain Mr. Ethan.

Match 2: As if the underground temple cavern wasn't astonishing enough, the camera then focused in on the wall mural of the god Anubis and what appears to be the Smoke Monster. The mural sits above the Cerberus vent. It seems to indicate that the Smoke Monster has long existed. The photo of Desmond & Penny caused a bit of a stir when the female in the shot mysteriously changed, and again when it appeared that there was more than one copy of the photograph. Still, it has played an important role in the character development and story telling of fan favourite Desmond. The Ancient Hieroglyphic Door is just that, and it is located within one of the Dharmaville houses. It offered Ben right of entry to an underground grotto , in which he was able to summon the Smoke Monster via a hole in the ground. Locke's Orange Peel isn't a piece that holds a lot of meaning, but it is a piece that is instantly recognisable. It offered up a rather surreal moment, when a disturbed Kate was removing the boots from a deceased Oceanic passenger. Locke merely smiled at her, revealing the bright orange peel. It was apparent there and then that Locke would be an interesting character.

Prop Cup 2009 - Round 2, Matches 1 & 2

So, here we go with Round 2, and there are sure to be some tough choices ahead. All round 2 polls have been randomly drawn. Polls allow for multiple voting, as was the case in Round 1. Choose carefully, and good luck to the props.

As always, feel free to comment via the blog, and you can also partake in a more in-depth discussion via the forum - Prop Cup 2009 Discussion Thread

Match 1: Perhaps one of the most unsettling props to date, the cabin chair kept us on the edge of our seats. Ben later admitted to lying about seeing Jacob in the chair, but will the emergence of the "Man in Black" give the chair new meaning? The Virgin Mary Statues have been on a journey that rivals even our Losties' journey; from the innocence of charity, to the darkness of drug smuggling, and then crashing down onto the mysterious island. The Frozen Donkey Wheel provided a moment that turned everything on its head. An icey wheel that, when turned, would transport a person (or animal) across the world and into the future. Need anything else be said? Wow. The Sonic Fence was Dharma's defence against the hostiles, but was also proven useful against the Smoke Monster. Still, it was no match for Richard.

Match 2: The Swan Station Countdown Timer was last year's Prop Cup Winner, and deservedly so. The anticipation that came with watching the clock tick down is unrivalled, and who can forget the first time that those daunting hieroglyphic symbols appeared? The Fuselage Wreckage represents Oceanic Flight 815, as well as our Losties' survival in the weeks following the crash. You only need think back to the opening scene of the Pilot episode to appreciate it's magnificence. The Ajira Plane played a pivotal role in reuniting some of our favourite Losties. It provided some great scenes, such as the Oceanic 6 (almost) reunion, the reveal of Locke's suicide note, and of course Frank's outstanding landing skills. Locke's Drawing of the Smoke Monster pretty much cemented into stone that Locke was special. At a young age, decades before arriving on the island, he somehow knew of the future that awaited him, even if only subconsciously.

Match 23: Chang's 8:15 alarm clock competes against Caesar's shotgun, little Ben's sandwiches, Daniel's Dharma hardhat, the ever popular Swan Station Orientation film, and the sizeable Freighter.

Match 24: The metal Ajira container was an important piece of Season 5, but how will it do against the blue Dharma jeep, the Swan site digger, the Swan Station wall mural, the mysterious cabin (formerly known as Jacob's cabin), and Locke's magnificent knife set.
